Alison Hargreaves, First Woman to conquer Everest (Great Women Mountaineers no 5)
"It is better to have lived one day as a tiger than 1,000 days as a sheep" Tibetan proverb.
Alison Hargreaves was the first woman to conquer Everest on May 13th 1995, alone and without oxygen. A successful summit of K2 was followed by her tragic death on the descent...

Britain's Rarest Fish
Exhibits in Keswick Museum included a Vendace, a fish found in Derwent Water and dating back to the Ice Age. Plus a mantrap for catching poachers. Ouch!

Great Women Mountaineers no 4: Annie Smith Peck (1850-1935)
Annie's looking cheesed off here because after she'd scaled the Northern-most summit of Peruvian mountain Cordillera Blanca and the Chileans had named it in her honour (Cumbre Aña Peck) Fanny Bullock Workman disputed the height of the mountain to ensure she didn't get the women's altitude record. It's tough at the top....
